Your Growing Baby

Now that your baby has all of the organs and structures that she'll need as an adult, her job is to grow and grow. At the end of your fourth month of pregnancy, your baby is just 4 inches long!

All four chambers of her heart are beating rapidly -- 140 beats per minute to be exact. Listen closely and you can hear your baby's heartbeat, which is very fast compared to yours and mine.

During the mid-stages of your pregnancy, your baby's major systems are continuing to develop. She’s beginning to swallow and suck, and her body is now growing faster than her head. Her fingers and toes are well developed, and the buds of her teeth are starting to show up.

At the end of the fifth month your baby has gone through quite a growth spurt, and is now 8-10 inches long. Her body is covered with a downy covering called lanugo and her hair is beginning to grow on her head. She's even starting to grow eyelashes and eyebrows. At this point, you may be able to feel her moving within you!

By the end of your 6th month, your baby is approximately 13 inches long and weighs about 2 pounds. Her fingerprints can be seen, although her skin is very thin since she has not yet built up any fat. Her eyes are starting to open!

Exercise Tip
Walking is good for you when you're pregnant.  If you can, try and walk briskly for at least 10 minutes every day.
